In the mid-1990s, a modest strip plaza along Yonge Street in North York emerged as the business, social and cultural heart of the Persian community, eventually evolving into what we now know as “The Iranian Plaza.” As the community flourished beyond this initial hub, the neighborhood transformed into one of the most vibrant cultural districts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), aptly named “Little Persia”. This name celebrates the rich Persian cultural heritage and the values of the community.

In recent years, the city has endeavored to honor the Persian community and their significant contributions by officially recognizing and naming this cultural district in Willowdale. However, there have been some inaccurate names circulating, and it is essential to set the record straight regarding the most appropriate designation. Alternative names like “Tehranto” or “Little Tehran” fail to encompass the breadth of Persian culture and can foster an exclusionary narrative. Persian culture represents an inclusive heritage that extends far beyond Iranian borders, celebrated through art, cuisine, music, and traditions embraced by millions worldwide.

This inclusivity is particularly important in recognizing the legacy of Cyrus the Great, the revered king of the Persian Empire. His Charter of Human Rights is celebrated not only within the Persian community but also among Jewish communities and human rights advocates globally. By acknowledging the concentrated Persian communities worldwide, we pay tribute to the founder of the Persian Empire and his enduring commitment to peace and humanity.

Referring to the neighborhood as “Tehran-To” or “Little Tehran” diminishes the rich tapestry of Persian culture and the contributions of Iranian-Canadian entrepreneurs and business owners who hail from beautiful cities like Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz, Rasht, Kurdistan, Ahvaz, Mashhad, Yazd, and beyond. These alternative names fail to recognize the diverse influences that shape Persian heritage as a whole.

By embracing the term “Little Persia”, we acknowledge and celebrate the entirety of Persian culture, language, art, and its myriad expressions. This term rightfully honors all who contribute to the Persian legacy, regardless of their city of origin.

To truly reflect the diversity and inclusivity of this vibrant community, the most appropriate and correct term to adopt is “Little Persia”.
